Nintendo Wii: The Real Game Console - Technology - Communication

The Wii is the fifth home video game console coming out from Nintendo that has already created a storm in the gaming market. Nintendo launches it as a direct successor to the Nintendo GameCube, which was a super-gadget in the industry. Nintendo claims that its console targets a broader demographic than that of its competitors including Microsoft Xbox 360, and Sony PlayStation3.

A distinguishing feature of the console is the wireless controller, the Wii Remote that can be used as a handheld pointing device that can detect acceleration in three dimensions. WiiConect24 is another feature that enables it to receive messages and updates over the Internet while in standby mode. Nintendo brought out the idea of gaming console for the first time at the 2004 E3 press conference. It later unveiled the system at the 2005 E3.The console Nintendo Wii later got conceived in 2001.

The console was known by the name of Revolution until April 27, 2006. According to the Nintendo Style Guide, the name "is simply Wii, not Nintendo Wii," this simply means that the first home console Nintendo was marketed outside of Japan without the company name featured in its trademark. Nintendo announced release of Wii in Japan, North America, South America, Australasia, Asia and Europe on September 16, 2006. It later announced its release in South Korea at the start of 2008. Nintendo targets a wide demographic market beating other seventh generation consoles.

The Wii console is Nintendo's smallest home unit until this date coming with a measurement of 44 x 157 x 215.4 which is almost similiarto three DVD cases stacked together. The system weighs 1.2 kg which is the lightest of other three major seventh generation consoles.The gaming console Nintendo Wii features an illuminated slot-loading optical media drive that accepts both 12 cm Wii Optical Discs and Nintendo GameCube Game Discs on the front.
